A new start in a Habitat house
Eight-year-old Kevin Ksor lists these seemingly ordinary moments as the big and fun changes to come with the new Habitat house. Changing housing policy in El Salvador
Habitat El Salvador recently received the Dubai International Award for Best Practices, sponsored by the United Nations Program for Human Settlements and the government of Dubai. The award recognizes the important role that Habitat has played in chairing the national committee that drafted El Salvadors’s new housing policy.
Recovery and rebuilding in Nepal
The April 25 earthquake that devastated Kathmandu and surrounding areas was the worst disaster to hit Nepal in 80 years. On May 12, a second massive earthquake hit. Habitat Nepal has mobilized hundreds of volunteers and staff to remove rubble and debris and distribute shelter kits and water backpacks to affected families. Habitat also has begun initial construction of permanent houses in the heavily damaged district of Kavre. In November, the 2015 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project — planned long before the earthquakes — will continue.
Building impact in Asia-Pacific
The fifth Asia-Pacific Housing Forum will be held Sept. 1-4 in Hong Kong, with simultaneous satellite events in Nepal, India and the Philippines. Under a “Building Impact” theme, the Habitat conference brings together representatives from the private, public, civil and academic sectors to develop sustainable housing solutions.
“If I hadn’t been ready to help myself, Habitat’s
help could only take me so far. I lent my hand to
Habitat so they would lend me theirs.”
— Habitat Colombia homeowner Jeimy Pachon
Partnering to improve lives in Cote d’Ivoire
Work done by Habitat Cote d’Ivoire has created positive policy change in the area of land tenure and title. Habitat’s collaboration with the government to design a unique document has improved and accelerated the awarding of land titles, with more than 3,000 families now having documentary proof of land ownership and thousands more expected to benefit. In addition to this achievement, Habitat Cote d’Ivoire recently was honored by the country’s Ministry of Solidarity, Family, Women and Children for its partnership in a national program devoted to helping orphans and vulnerable children.
